The American South As We Know It Docuseries

Through my project Preserving Spaces I have had the opportunity to meed many other history enthusiasts in the Charlotte region. It’s been an intimidating venture, because I don’t really see myself as much of a historian. I am technically educated in the topic, having a Bachelor’s of Arts in Anthropology with a focus on archaeology - specifically historic preservation. But, my experience basically ends there. I consider myself a much more adept and experienced photojournalist and story teller.

So when Preserving Spaces began to take off and people were coming to me to help retell the stories of local history, I was nervous to get involved. During that period, I met Frederick Murphy who ran an instagram profile called History Before Us. A couple years later, when we reconnected, we discussed telling stories that were not necessarily historic, but influenced by history heavily. He had already produced the film The American South As We Know It and was interested in creating a docuseries of the same name and style.

I was brought onto the crew to help document the series in still images. Below are some photos, mostly behind the scenes, of our travels and filming for the docuseries.
